Proper Pregnancy Nutrition – 2 Tips On Foods To Take And Avoid

“We eat so that we may live”. This holds true for both, the expectant mother and the unborn baby. Unless the mother-to-be ensures herself of healthy nutrition, she cannot expect the growing fetus to develop properly to its full size and be delivered without any problems. Also, proper pregnancy nutrition ensures that the baby is born healthy with a correct birth weight.

Of course, a diet has to be adhered to; the pregnant woman cannot eat anything and everything that she wants to! The doctor is always there for guidance. In fact, the help of a qualified dietician can be taken to plan out a proper nutrition chart for the entire length of the pregnancy.

In general, proper pregnancy nutrition should include the following—

(1) Calcium is a very important mineral since it aids in the baby developing strong bones. So the expectant mother needs a daily dose of calcium. According to the US Recommended Daily Allowance for Calcium, the mother-to-be has to ingest 1000 mg of calcium per day. The same holds true even after delivery of the newborn since the mother will breast-feed the baby. Proper pregnancy nutrition demands that the expectant mother drink up to four glasses of milk per day. Some women get a feeling of nausea when trying to drink milk. In such cases, ordinary cheese, cottage cheese or yoghurt can be recommended as a substitute for milk.

(2) For proper pregnancy nutrition, it is vital to have an adequate intake of folic acid and iron. At least 400 mg of folic acid a day has to be consumed by the pregnant woman, if she wants to make sure that her baby is free from problems like spina bifida or even other forms of brain damage. Folic acid can be found in foods like nuts, leafy green vegetables, beans and certain breakfast cereals. Foods rich in iron such as—fish, whole grain breads, lean red meats and chicken or turkey—help in preventing anemia.

Eating habits do undergo a change during pregnancy. While some women experience severe bouts of nausea, some do not even know the meaning of morning sickness! Others develop deep cravings for unusual kinds of foods, which could be anything from pickles to ice cream! What has to be borne in mind is proper pregnancy nutrition and that every type of food eaten creates an impact on the expectant mother’s health as well as on her yet-to-be-born baby’s health.

A few words of warning are to be mentioned here. Proper pregnancy nutrition says “no” to any kind of dieting during this period, especially for those pregnant women who might have been overweight before or had nutritional problems prior to their pregnancies. The doctor’s instructions regarding weight gain or weight loss have to be followed very strictly. As a matter of fact, on an average, the expectant mother puts on 25 to 40 pounds of additional weight during the state of pregnancy.

Finally, to ensure proper pregnancy nutrition for herself and her unborn child, the mother-to-be has to avoid these at all costs—alcohol, sodium in large amounts, caffeine, milk products like eggnog that are not pasteurized and artificial sweeteners.

What to Expect in the Pregnancy Stages

There are three pregnancy stages, which are called trimesters. Each stage lasts about three months. During each of these stages, the mother-to-be experiences new changes in her body as the baby grows and develops inside the womb. One of the major changes is that your belly expands and your emotions are like a roller coaster. You will probably cry for no apparent reason, so that your partner feels as if he has to tiptoe around you. You will probably be very fearful about what is going to happen to your body and of course you will have fears about the health of the baby. These are natural emotions that every pregnant woman experiences and should not be cause for alarm.

During the first stage of pregnancy, which lasts until about the 12th week, you will have to learn about being pregnant. This is when you will start to feel more tired than usual and have to take frequent naps. You will also start making frequent trips to the bathroom because the baby growing in the uterus places more pressure on your bladder. Morning sickness is a symptom of this stage when you feel nauseated in the morning or at various times of the day. The smells of cooking could make you feel sick and many women actually lose weight during this stage. Eating plain crackers helps to alleviate the feeling of nausea, but if you are actually throwing up a lot of the time, your doctor can give you suggestions as what to do. Some of the other changes you will experience during this stage include decreased interest in lovemaking, breast tenderness, expanding belly, and an increase in your basal temperature.

It is during the second stage of your pregnancy that you will start to look pregnant with a growing belly. The nausea and fatigue start to decline during these weeks and you will start to take an increased interest in sexual activity. The sexual organs and breasts have increased bloodflow, which will make them more sensitive. The baby starts to move during the fourth month and this is an exciting time for mothers-to-be as it makes the pregnancy more real for them. The first ultrasound usually occurs about the 18th or 19th week and it is them you can see the life that is growing inside you. Some of the physical changes you will notice in your body during this stage include milk leaking from your breasts on times and pressure on the lower parts of your body, which could result in haemorrhoids or varicose veins. When you visit your doctor, you will be able to hear the baby`s heartbeat.

The last stage of pregnancy is the third trimester. You will probably feel uncomfortable because your body is larger. This is especially true of it is during the hot weather of the summer. You will become impatient and want the baby to be born as soon as possible. You will start to feel excited about the baby and start nesting, which refers to making a room in your home for the baby and shopping for baby clothing. This is probably the most uncomfortable stage as you will experience backache and leg cramps and the need to urinate increases. During this time you will likely experience false labor, called Braxton-Hicks contractions, which are painless contractions of the uterus as it moves the baby into the birth canal. Sometimes, these contractions can be quite painful, but they usually subside after a very short time.

How Early Can you Have Symptom of Pregnancy?

Experiences and opinions on how early can you have symptom of pregnancy have been diverse. Though, most of the symptoms arrive with a missed period or within one or two weeks of it, however, for some it happens the reverse. It is not rare when some pregnant women have claimed to feel significant body changes even before a missed period or within only a couple of days after conceiving. Therefore, keeping a track of all noticeable changes before and after a missed period is essential, in order to confirm your pregnancy.

Earliest Possible Signs Of Pregnancy

Several experiences of pregnant women reveal how they differ in noticing the pregnancy symptoms. They not only differ in terms of variety of symptoms, also in the order of their arrival and the period of pregnancy in which those are noticeable. Following experiences of pregnant women will give you practical tips on how early can you have symptom of pregnancy –

1.Determining symptoms of pregnancy can be varying with women, as some women conclude that within seven or eight days from implantation of eggs in the uterus, HCG hormones starts to be released that trigger symptoms of pregnancy to arrive.

2.Pregnancy hormones start taking effects from about ten days from the conception. Symptoms tend to be more intense with gradual increase in the level of pregnancy hormones. Even if these hormones emerge quite early stage of pregnancy, yet it is not possible to detect such hormones through your blood or urine before schedules of your periods.

3.Many reported to have noticed frequent urination and aversion to foods around two weeks after fertilization. Still, instances are not rare when no symptoms were noted until two months of pregnancy.

4.Some women claim to be unnoticed about their pregnancy for about one month. Weight gain can be a determining factor in detecting pregnancy, as some noticed their weight to remain same even after permutation of various weight loss regimens. In spite of losing they started to gain weight, on the contrary. If you experience the same, take a closer look on what other changes you are undergoing along with weight gain to detect pregnancy.

5.Apart from a missed period, another obvious symptom of pregnancy that most women notice is tender, sore and heavy breasts, which may arrive even before missed periods. This symptom may often accompany with other symptoms like heartburn, morning sickness, achy cramps, fatigues, nausea etc., which again may vary in women.

6.Increased level of basal body temperature for some has been first early symptoms of pregnancy. Chart your body temperature as well as other signs that may come with the temperature rise. People who have waited till their body temperature to be raised until 20 degree higher before testing along with presence of other few symptoms have shown a positive pregnancy test result.

Though, usually baseline of how early can you have symptom of pregnancy is fixed as fifth or sixth week of conception, however, make a chart of any possible sign you may notice that was not before you were pregnant.

Don't Let the Symptoms of Morning Sickness Win

If you are finding that the symptoms ofmorning sickness are ruining your day, then it is time to stand against them sothat the symptoms of morning sickness do not win!

Morning sickness in pregnancy occurs mostoften during the first trimester, and despite the name of this sickness thesymptoms do not always appear only in the morning. In fact many women reportthat the symptoms of morning sickness last throughout the day, causing thisseries of conditions to be extremely debilitating for their work, relationshipsand other aspects of life. After all, it is hard to enjoy life when you arefeeling constantly nauseous and have your head in the toilet bowl!

The symptoms of morning sickness includenausea, vomiting and dizziness, and although these can strike at any timethroughout the day, they are commonly felt as a woman rises from bed in themorning. When undergoing this experience, it is hard to imagine the chickenfight against the symptoms when, but with a little bit of research andunderstanding there is a way you can stand against the symptoms of morningsickness, reducing or even eliminating them from a life during this criticaltime pregnancy.

There are many cures for morning sickness inthe literature, but you will find that not all of them work effectively inreducing the symptoms of morning sickness. Most of these killers involve thepatient eating or drinking something to relieve the nausea, and many of thesecures for morning sickness actually make a lot of sense when you look at themclosely.

One time honoured treatment is eating drytoast or crackers and many women report that this very quickly reduces thesymptoms of morning sickness. Another great idea is to eat many small meals aday instead of the traditional, three large meals a day. This can limit thespikes in glucose which I thought to amplify the effects of the sickness, andalso serve to constantly keep small amounts of food in the stomach to absorbany excess liquid. So nibbling on dry toast, crackers or salt and vinegar chipsseveral times a day is much preferred to eating three hearty meals a day, andcould also have the added benefit of helping you control your weight duringthese early stages of pregnancy.

A variety of traditional concoctionsinvolving ginger, garlic, honey and lemon are also touted across the Internetas possible cures for morning sickness. Some women swear by these methods, others find that it does not help them at all. The best advice we can getpregnant women is to try these methods and see if they reduce the symptoms ofmorning sickness, and if they do apply those that seem to be the mosteffective.

One practical action that you can take intrying to limit the symptoms of morning sickness is to take a lot longer to getup in the morning. Many women report that if they get out of bed quickly, thesymptoms increase and they can last throughout the day, whereas those women whotake a lot longer to rise in the morning reported reduction in their feelingsof nausea. Perhaps you can encourage your partner to bring you a nice warm cupof tea and some dry toast while you are waking up, then you can sip of tea anddeeper toast while taking 10 to 15 minutes to actually get out of bed. If youare a busy person, you may consider this 15 minutes wasted, but if you keep inmind that this can reduce the symptoms of morning sickness throughout the day,it is more like 15 minutes invested in your entire day's activities.

Although doctors do not have a firmunderstanding as to the causes of Pregnancy nausea, they all agree that themost important thing is not the reduction in the feelings you get, but to makesure that you do not vomit excessively. Excessive vomiting can cause seriousdehydration which can have adverse effects for both mother and baby thereforereducing the symptoms of morning sickness is a medical problem with farreaching consequences, not simply a matter of making a woman feel better!

If you are experiencing the symptoms ofmorning sickness, I would strongly encourage you to do some research and trymany of the methods suggested in the literature to reduce these symptoms. Thiswill serve to protect you and your baby, and help you to live an enjoyable andproductive lifestyle during pregnancy.

What are some quick remedies for morning sickness?

I’m at work and am feeling really nauseated. I haven’t vomited (yet). Any ideas on what I can do?
I’m at work, so I need some advice on what I can do NOW. Thanks!

Eat, eat, eat. Try to keep something in your stomach at all times to cut down on nausea. I find that bland foods (crackers, cereal, toast, etc) work better than spicy, greasy, or sour ones. Also, I find that things that are heavy on protein seem to help (nuts, peanut butter, cheese, yogurt, milk, meat, etc). Also, one person said to try 7-Up or Sprite, but I find that carbonation makes things worse — you’ll have to figure out what works for you. Good luck!

Is 4 weeks after sex to early to determine pregnancy?

I took a pregnancy test 4 weeks after sex and it came up negative but i feel a little strange – could i still be pregnant? Did anyone test negative at 4 weeks but found out later they were actually pregnant?
I have irregular periods – my last one was in March! so i cannot wait until my next period as it may not arrive at all anyway!

Generally women can test about 2 weeks after conception and get an accurate result. If you seriously think you’re pregnant, then ask the doc for a blood test.
