The early signs of pregnancy create a mixed feeling of joy, fear, and nervousness. It is the lack of knowledge of what happens to your body during pregnancy till delivering of the baby that scares you the most. A pregnancy week-by-week guide will help you to overcome your apprehensions and wait for nature’s miracle to behold in flesh and bones after the completion of the pregnancy.

Pregnancy week by week developments:

Week one to four
During this period the sperm forming a zygote the basic form of life, fertilizes the egg.

Week five to eight
A woman exhibits the early signs of pregnancy that is confirmed by the medical tests. By sixth week the baby’s heart starts to beat and by eighth week the fetus develops rudimentary limbs.

Week nine to twelve
During this period your body starts expanding to accommodate the growing fetus with growing body parts. It is also a time of subsiding nausea or morning sickness.

Week thirteen to sixteen
The baby’s bones begin to harden and it starts moving in the womb. You can hear the baby’s heartbeat during your visit to the doctor.

Week seventeen to twenty
The baby’s internal organs start developing rapidly. The fetus gets covered with soft fine hair called lanugo. This is the time when accurate gender of the baby can be checked.

Week twenty-one to twenty four
At this stage you will feel slight contractions as the uterus starts preparing for the delivery. Baby begins to practice breathing to be prepared for it at time of birth. The baby also develops fat deposits in order to regulate body temperature at the time of birth.

Week twenty-four to twenty eight
The baby hears muffled outside sounds and sense light at this stage. The baby’s movement starts slowing due to lack of space in the uterus.

Week twenty-nine to thirty two
The baby’s head grows rapidly in proportion to the rest of the body. The brain and eyes are almost fully developed, only the lungs need development.

Week thirty-three to thirty six
The baby grows to the length of sixteen inches and weighs four pounds at this stage. It can open-close its eyes, the fingernails too start growing at this stage.

Week thirty-seven to forty
The baby’s major organs are fully developed by now and lungs too grow to prepare for breathing outside the womb. The baby will drop to birthing stage in the pelvis. The actual delivery time could be two weeks before or after the expected due date. Be prepared for the arrival of your bundle of joy.

Maintain a pregnancy weekly calendar to note down all the developments and other relevant information provided by your doctor to monitor the growth of your baby. Good pregnancy health is vital during the progressing pregnancy week by week.

There are three pregnancy stages, which are called trimesters. Each stage lasts about three months. During each of these stages, the mother-to-be experiences new changes in her body as the baby grows and develops inside the womb. One of the major changes is that your belly expands and your emotions are like a roller coaster. You will probably cry for no apparent reason, so that your partner feels as if he has to tiptoe around you. You will probably be very fearful about what is going to happen to your body and of course you will have fears about the health of the baby. These are natural emotions that every pregnant woman experiences and should not be cause for alarm.

During the first stage of pregnancy, which lasts until about the 12th week, you will have to learn about being pregnant. This is when you will start to feel more tired than usual and have to take frequent naps. You will also start making frequent trips to the bathroom because the baby growing in the uterus places more pressure on your bladder. Morning sickness is a symptom of this stage when you feel nauseated in the morning or at various times of the day. The smells of cooking could make you feel sick and many women actually lose weight during this stage. Eating plain crackers helps to alleviate the feeling of nausea, but if you are actually throwing up a lot of the time, your doctor can give you suggestions as what to do. Some of the other changes you will experience during this stage include decreased interest in lovemaking, breast tenderness, expanding belly, and an increase in your basal temperature.

It is during the second stage of your pregnancy that you will start to look pregnant with a growing belly. The nausea and fatigue start to decline during these weeks and you will start to take an increased interest in sexual activity. The sexual organs and breasts have increased bloodflow, which will make them more sensitive. The baby starts to move during the fourth month and this is an exciting time for mothers-to-be as it makes the pregnancy more real for them. The first ultrasound usually occurs about the 18th or 19th week and it is them you can see the life that is growing inside you. Some of the physical changes you will notice in your body during this stage include milk leaking from your breasts on times and pressure on the lower parts of your body, which could result in haemorrhoids or varicose veins. When you visit your doctor, you will be able to hear the baby`s heartbeat.

The last stage of pregnancy is the third trimester. You will probably feel uncomfortable because your body is larger. This is especially true of it is during the hot weather of the summer. You will become impatient and want the baby to be born as soon as possible. You will start to feel excited about the baby and start nesting, which refers to making a room in your home for the baby and shopping for baby clothing. This is probably the most uncomfortable stage as you will experience backache and leg cramps and the need to urinate increases. During this time you will likely experience false labor, called Braxton-Hicks contractions, which are painless contractions of the uterus as it moves the baby into the birth canal. Sometimes, these contractions can be quite painful, but they usually subside after a very short time.

For some people pregnancy is a pleasure, while for others it is really a painful period of time. Often the onset of pregnancy brings along with it a number of problems, such as morning sickness, headaches, and lack of appetite to name a few.

There’s Good News for Pregnant Women Suffering from Headaches

Often those women who suffer from horrible attacks of migraines feel relieved after the onset of the pregnancy; other hand, there are women who experience horrible headaches during pregnancy – mostly during the first and the last semesters.

It is still unclear why pregnant women suffering from migraines before pregnancy won’t suffer headaches during pregnancy, and vice-versa. Some medical research studies say that the reason could be safely attributed to the increase of hormones in the blood, especially estrogen and progesterone.

Serotonin, a substance that is known as a ‘brain-chemical’ (which is responsible for regulation of pain), which is found in the blood is greatly influenced by the existence of the above-mentioned hormones in the blood of pregnant women. It seems that when the levels of estrogen falls, the levels of Serotonin tend to increase and vice-versa.

The major causes for headache during pregnancy remain the same as before, i.e. stress, bad posture, hormonal changes in the blood, blood pressure, muscle tension etc. getting to the root cause would definitely help eliminating it. However, identifying the real cause is quite difficult and cumbersome.

Self medication is not advisable against headache during pregnancy without any consultation with the doctor. In some cases, the doctor will prescribe medication, which is safe for the would-be-mother and the baby and reduce both intensity and frequency of headaches during pregnancy. Often, the doctor will prescribe a change in diet to include zinc and multivitamins rather than prescribe hard-core medication to pregnant lady suffering from headaches.

Some doctors have tried to experiment with regulation of estrogen levels with excellent results. It seems that estrogen does influence the levels of Serotonin and careful regulation might provide the long-sought answers for relief from headaches during pregnancy.

Until then women who suffer from this misery have very few alternatives like putting up with the terrible headache, sleep as much as you can so your body and mind is rested well, and eat a balanced and preferably vegetarian diet. Avoid coffee and tea for the period when you are pregnant.
